Gas Lease FAQs post coming soon

Many of you are asking some good questions. I will be putting up a post with those Questions and Answers, hopefully, by tomorrow sometime. When I do get it posted I will alert our members by email to let them know that this info is available here on the blog.

The Barnett Shale rig report

The Star-Telegram posted a report on Christmas Eve in the Business section about the new drilling rigs in the Barnett Shale for the period that ended on Friday, December 21, 2007. If interested, you can go here to read it.

Get in touch with your inner math geek

Neighborhood Group member Warren showed us a website that explains a little more clearly how to calculate the square footage of your property.  It also includes another way to calculate the area if your property is oddly shaped which is much easier than the one I alluded to in an earlier post.

That other formula involved measuring each inside angle of the property shape and from there descended into a math abyss where terms like “polar coordinates”, “vector notation”, “sine” and “cosine” were being tossed around like juggling chainsaws. So, instead of risking a migrane headache, try the website mentioned above. It might save you a few brain cells. Thanks, Warren.

A short lesson on the gas drilling procedure

There is a very good Flash video presentation on the Dale Resources website about how a company goes about extracting gas (and oil) from the ground. The graphics are excellent and the video is a good primer on the process of gas drilling and extraction without a lot of technical jargon. Click on the “video” graphic near the bottom of the screen to start the movie.

There is also a 3D interactive presentation of an oil/gas rig on the same page where the viewer can click on various components of the drill rig and drill site to find out what each one is and what it does. A great tool for visual learners.

The Barnett Shale? What is that?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock (pun intended) the last year or so, you’ve no doubt heard about, read about and maybe even talked about the Barnett Shale. But what is the Barnett Shale exactly?

Wikipedia’s entry on the Barnett Shale calls it a “geological formation of economic significance”. Regarding its size:

The formation is estimated to stretch from the city of Dallas to west of the city of Fort Worth and south, covering 5,000 square miles (13,000 km²) and at least 17 counties.

Regarding its production potential:

The field is proven to have 2.5 trillion cubic feet (59 km³) of natural gas, and is widely estimated to contain as much as 30 trillion cubic feet of natural gas resources.

And where does it rank with other shales or gas fields?

Some experts have suggested the Barnett Shale may be the largest onshore natural gas field in the United States.

Barnett Shale Maps blog has a huge collection of every kind of map, chart, table, facts and figures with information pertaining to the Barnett Shale.  The blog owner asks to bear in mind that the maps are for educational purposes only and some may be incomplete or out of date.  Stop by and check it out.
